Situation: Barnard Incorporated Attorneys is one of the larger law firms in South Africa, owned and managed by its directors and shareholders, who all form part of the practising attorneys at the firm. In line with prevailing laws, the shareholders hold office as directors as required.
Impact: Although the leadership team identified strategic seats and relevant office-bearers were assigned, the continued involvement in the practice constrained the Managing Director in executing the firm's strategy.
Resolution: Early 2020, ECO-SE was implemented, and management teams aligned in the strategy to assist the Managing Director and COO to work on – and not in – the business full-time and give clear direction. Implementation was done one month before RSA COVID-19 Level 5 lock-down. Despite the adverse economic consequences, by utilising the tools provided by ECO-SE, management could remotely give guidance in executing the Vision and Strategy of the firm. These tools provided and retained a clear focus, and the firm continued to make substantial progress in the areas earmarked for growth at the beginning of 2020.
